My trip along the canal

CanalBargeLocal resident and activist Eunice Main paid a visit to the Digital Sentinel today to tell us a bit about her recent adventures along the canal!

I have been volunteering with Re-Union Canal Boats and just recently started a 12 week course, which involves steering, learning the ins-and-outs of the boats and I am pure loving it!

We get to steer along some of the straight bits of the canal as we travel from the quay to Slateford aqueduct. Yesterday I steered the boat under a bridge, everyone was running to check the sides to make sure we didn’t bump anything. I’ve not been trusted to do a corner yet but that will come and hopefully we won’t all end up overboard!

We also learned a bit about hospitality, we learned some of the basics, how to properly set the table and how to put up cake stands, that was a bit difficult they are so fidgety!

It’s great being out on the canal, everyone is so friendly, waving as you go by, it’s such a great laugh!

I am also part of a women’s group which meets on the boat on a Wednesday, which I started at last week and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The women were so friendly and made me feel welcome.

I am hoping to do more and maybe even take a boat out one day myself! HAHA! Thanks to all the crew. I would like to wish Sam who is about to start maternity leave good luck!
