Starting Well Wester Hailes

2015-04-25 Open Space Event

Living Well Wester Hailes, a group which looks at ways local people and organisations can improve Wester Hailes, are currently asking parents what they think are important targets for children starting primary school to ensure they have the best start in life.

They have consulted with 70 parents, asking them what they feel are the most important things that a child should be able to do by the time they start Primary School. Some examples of the many common aspirations that parents have for their children are:

  • Be able to swim / confident in water
  • Has a friend/ can play with others
  • Frequently takes part in healthy activities (sport, activity hobby)
  • Attends Peep groups
  • Joined  the Library
  • Able to play with toys on their own
  • Is toilet trained
  • Can ride a bike
  • Can dress themselves
  • Can read and write their name
  • Can count to ten or more  x 10
  • Can dress themselves (tie own shoes, do buttons, zips)
  • Tell a nursery rhyme x 2
  • Has a safe place to play
  • Can throw a ball
  • Can express their feelings
  • Can recognise colours

It is very important that we all work together and that we are speaking a common language with regard to children’s wellbeing.  In order to achieve this – the intention is to agree on a local set of statements from the large list already identified by parents that local parents and services work towards in order to give children the best start in life.

In order to do this, we would like to invite you to an event on Tuesday 27 October, 10.00am til 11.30am at Wester Hailes Library in the Connect Room upstairs where we will discuss and agree the final set of statements before we start sharing these within Wester Hailes.

If you intend to come to this event, please email Gordon.mclean@edinburgh.gov.uk.
