Bogus Workmen incidents at Oxgangs

Police Scotland logo

We’ve been dealing with recent reports of suspected bogus workmen in the Oxgangs area of the city. Whilst accredited and reputable firms have been working in the area, two males have presented on the doorsteps of local residents purporting to work for the firms indicating their association with the liveried vehicles parked nearby on the pretext of supplying and fitting of smoke alarms.

Claims were made by the suspects that they work for City of Edinburgh Council. These attempts to gain unlawful entry to properties have been thwarted by the quick thinking of the residents who have had a presence of mind not to allow them into their homes.

We have carried out thorough enquiry and seek any further information that could lead to the identity of the two males seen last Thursday (21st) around lunchtime.

Sergeant Coxon of the Community Policing Team at Wester Hailes Police Station added

We would like to provide reassurance to residents that we are aware of these cynical attempts to enter properties and ask that valid identity badges be asked for at all times and where doubt exists, do not permit any person entry to your home. Keep them out and get us out
