Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after a wilful fire-raising incident in Murrayburn Green around 9 pm on Sunday 27 March 2016.

Abandoned furniture was deliberately set alight in a common close.

Eight homes were evacuated and four residents were treated for smoke-inhalation at the scene.

Officers are now keen to speak to anyone with information that can help them trace those responsible.

Chief Inspector Chris Scobbie, Area Commander of West and Pentlands said:

Thankfully no-one was seriously injured in this incident but it could have been much worse.

I hope the person responsible for this incident takes stock of how easily people could have been seriously hurt.

I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area around 9 pm last night and who might have information that can assist us with our inquiries.

I would also ask residents to avoid leaving items of furniture or rubbish in communal areas where they can be a target for fire-raising.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 101 or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
