Ready, Steady, Go for Fun Run 2017!

There are only a few days left before this year’s Fun Run with the event taking place on Sunday, 25 June 2017!

The Fun Run will start and finish at the Wester Hailes Education Centre, covering a 5k route round Wester Hailes with runners heading out from WHEC, along the canal to Hailesland, over the Murrayburn bridge, up the Greenway to Clovenstone before heading down the hill and back along the canal to WHEC.

Last year’s event was well attended with over 140 local people taking part and teams from WHALE Arts, SCOREscotland, the Clovenstone Amateur Boxing Club and many others.

The winning times last year were:

1st Back – Alan Cummings – 22.37
1st Woman Back – Sharyn Ramage – 23:10
1st Veteran Back – Billy Herron – 24:43
1st Boy Back – Bishal Roy – 26:20
1st Girl Back – Louize Gibson – 31:47

This year’s Fun Run will mark the fifth time the event has taken place since it was relaunched in 2012 after photos from the Sentinel newspaper of the old runs were published on local history blog From There to Here. The photos caused a lot of discussion in the community with people sharing many fond memories of what a great event it had been.

This popular demand caused local residents and organisations to get together, plan a new route and restart the event, keeping the original aim to make it an occasion everyone could join in with. The route is for all levels of ability whether people run, jog or walk. Above all, it’s about having fun and each year there is a great atmosphere with people of all abilities and ages taking part.

The Fun Run 2017 Planning Group includes the Community Council, Prospect Community Housing, Clovenstone Community Centre, SCOREscotland, The Health Agency, Open Heavens Church, Broomhouse Centre and WHEC.

Although official registration for runners has now closed, you can still join in the fun by heading along to WHEC and watching them all head off and of course give them a cheer if you see them passing you on the day!

If you would like to volunteer to help on the day please contact Caroline on 0131 272 5025. Volunteers are always needed on the route or at the Start/Finish and it’s a great event to be part of!

You can find photos of the recent fun runs online as well as read our report after the big day on the Digital Sentinel.
