FREE Edinburgh Fringe Festival activities for August 2017


The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for three weeks (4th August – 28th August 2017).  This year marks its 70th anniversary!!

Below we have listed some of the different festivals and events taking place as part of this year’s Fringe as well as highlighted some of the great free stuff on offer!

If you are interested in attending any of the events WHALE is happy to announce that they will be offering a number of free Family Bus Tickets courtesy of Edinburgh Fringe 2017’s Fringe Days Out project in partnership with Lothian Buses. To get your bus tickets simply drop in to the WHALE Arts Centre, 30 Westburn Grove, and speak to a member of staff. Tickets are limited so they will be distributed on a first come first served basis.

Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste.  Last year 50,266 performances of 3,269 shows in 294 venues took place at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  The full programme of events for 2017 can be found here.

Also taking place in August is the Edinburgh International Book Festival which runs from the 12th-28th August 2017.  The Book Festival welcomes around 1000 authors in over 800 events this year including novelists, poets and scientists.  The full programme for 2017 can be found here.

Among all the paid for activities there is a programme of FREE Edinburgh Fringe Activities. There is a whole range of comedy, arts, music and children’s events on for FREE this month. The full programme can be found here with the free children’s events found here.

Even if you don’t go to any shows, you can always just go for a wander through town and you will see many free street acts performing in and around town, at the Mound and along the Royal Mile.
