Local projects shortlisted at Climate Challenge Fund Awards

Local projects SCOREscotland’s Green Futures Project and WHALE Arts’ Westburn CAN project have been shortlisted at this year’s Climate Challenge Fund Awards.

Green Futures has been shortlisted in the travel category for helping to raise awareness of climate change amongst members of black and minority ethnic communities in West Edinburgh and providing assistance to reduce carbon emissions.

Project activities included support to reduce car use with initiatives including cycle lessons, bike maintenance training and promotion of local walking routes. Additional initiatives offered advice to help improve home energy efficiency and grow more food locally.

Westburn CAN has been shortlisted in the food category for engaging a broad section of local people in collective community participation to reduce carbon emissions.

Working in partnership with New Caledonian Woodlands, volunteers from all sectors of the community were engaged in practical activities to design and build an open access garden for community use. Project activities included food growing training and cookery workshops. An Eco Bike Shelter was created from locally sourced scrap material with further initiatives focussing on upcycling waste.

The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 2 November 2017 at Dynamic Earth. Wish them luck!
