Our community reporter Sindy Santos has sent an article about St Nicholas Church, and its programme of children’s activities. Inviting everyone to join their Messy Church and Toy Sale next Friday 7 September 2018 1.00pm – 4.00pm

St Nicholas Parish Church, sited at the West side of Edinburgh in Sighthill is well known as the Children’s Church, and for a good reason. Not only does the popular St Nicholas Day bring together over 200 children and their families in the community, providing gifts, candies and a smile to everyone in Christmas time. The Church benefits little ones all through the year, donating toys and gifts to schools and nurseries like Sighthill Primary, and every first Friday of the month opens it’s door for what is widely referred to as Messy Church.

Although I was brought up in a Catholic family and have had my children baptised in our regular church in Edinburgh, my view is that religion is not limited to the church group you go to, but the people who are involved there. And this is the main reason I am a faithful fan of Saint Nicholas Church of Scotland and, in particular, the events and activities they have for the children in our community.

There are currently a number of children’s groups using the Church premises, like the Thistle Dance Group, Rainbows, Brownies and Karate. The one I recommend, mainly because I have benefited a great deal from is Messy church. It meets on the first Friday of every month (between 1pm and 3pm). It has a homey atmosphere, and will give children and parents the feeling of being welcome from day one. Also, the unconditional work of the team of devoted vounteers to the children is second to none.

Kids and families of all ages are welcome and encouraged to use their creative skills drawing and painting, get their hands dirty in gardening corner and enjoy  free play using toys and equipment in the large hall.  All of these activities and, not forgetting the delicious snacks and drinks served during the event, make a trip to messy church worthwhile.

From time to time there is also a Jumble Sale. And this month in conjunction with the Messy Church there will be a big Toy Sale on Friday the 7th of September, 1pm – 4pm. This should not be missed, especially to everyone who is already getting ready for Christmas!

  • Quiz at Sighthill Bowling club on Friday 2 November 2018, from 7:30pm
  • Community Remembrance Sunday Service on 11 November 2018 from 10:45am
