SCOREscotland’s Green Futures Project has been awarded a Climate Challenge Fund Award 2018 in the Food Category. Community Reporter Sindy Santos has sent us a great article giving a report on the awards ceremony.
The ceremony which took place in Perth Concert Hall was organised by the environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful on behalf of the Scottish Government. The Awards recognise the work that has been undertaken by groups supported by the Climate Challenge Fund to tackle climate change in their communities.
SCOREscotland Green Futures Project helps meet demand from diverse communities in West and South West Edinburgh for activities including energy efficiency advice; food waste workshops, cycle training and fuel efficient driving; Young People redesign textiles and swap-shops; Carbon and Climate literacy events.
The project worked to encourage individual home food growing, limit food miles, reduce food waste through unnecessary buying particularly ‘buy one get one free’ supermarket deals; and raise awareness of the impact our food choices have on climate change.
The CCF Awards panel commented:
The Awards Panel commended this project for its community-driven food growing activities. The Panel were impressed with the holistic approach taken to link food choices to carbon emissions and climate change
More food related activities offered by SCOREscotland include Taste and Share work that inspires the community on new ways of cooking; using locally sourced ingredients and exploring other cultures’ recipes that others in the community may not be familiar with. REHIS Food Hygiene accredited training has been part of the programme to enable community members understand the principles and practice of good food hygiene and a certificate is award on completion.
The Guest Speaker, Heather Reid OBE physicist and meteorologist (you may know her from watching her on the telly telling us about the weather on BBC Scotland) said:
It was inspiring to see so many strong nominations and thewinning entries were outstanding in their efforts to help address climatechange.
SCOREscotland Manager Nabirye Balyejusa who received the Award was literally speechless. When she found her voice she said:
It was fantastic to be recognised for all the hard work the team put into making the food programme a great success
She continued to say that SCOREscotland is in it for the long haul as tackling climate change has no quick fix.
Significantly SCOREscotland appreciates all support received from Keep Scotland Beautiful and CEMVO Scotland.
