Wester Hailes Library Saturday Film Club is being taken over this weekend for a special free screening as part of the Puppet Animation Festival. The club will be screening The Red Turtle on Saturday 30 March 2019, 11.00am.
Set in a vibrant but at times forbidding tropical paradise, this is a touching, wordless, story about one man’s uneasy relationship with the powerful forces of nature all around him.
Shipwrecked on a deserted island rich with natural resources the man tries to escape, building a raft to sail away. A giant sea beast, a red turtle repeatedly foils his plans, beginning a relationship which will be central to both for the rest of their lives.
Produced by Studio Ghibli, this beautifully animated magical-realist fable, full of dynamic, visceral images and textures, was Oscar nominated and received Un Certain Regard Special Award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
Rated PG, 80 minutes running time.
