WHEC Futures: School Name Change Consultation

Wester Hailes Education Centre is currently holding a consultation as part of the work being carried out by the WHEC Futures group, asking local people what they would like the new name for their school to be.

In a message to local people Headteacher David Young said:

As you know , our parent council and key stakeholders fought to ensure our school retain its unique place in our community and its place in Edinburgh. One of the actions from this process was to ensure that there was a renewed focus on improving our school and from this the WHEC Futures Group was formed.

This group has representation from Education (primary and secondary), Councillors and the City of Edinburgh Council. We reached unanimous agreement that we would carry out some major changes to the school and the building. The flier attached will explain this.

Our first stage is to rename our school. This is a major undertaking and one which is extremely important as a school name can either have a positive or negative connotation. Therefore its really important that we get it right.

Some early suggestions have been:

  • Union High School (as we are situated close to the Union Canal)
  • Westside Academy (reflecting our geography in Edinburgh)
