City Of Edinburgh Council Considering Options For Redford Barracks Site

The UK Ministry of Defence recently confirmed their plans to sell off Redford Barracks in 2025.  However, the future use of the site is also dependent on planning permission from City of Edinburgh Council Planning Services.

The Council will hold a series of public consultation events over the next two weeks.

MSP for the Redford Barracks area, Gordon Macdonald, noted,

I oppose the closure of the barracks given the critical role the site serves as a practice ground from the Royal Military Tattoo and as accommodation for many of the performers.  However, if the site is to be sold off, it should be for the benefit of the people of Edinburgh, rather than being sold off to the highest bidder.

In a report to the House of Commons, Defence Infrastructure Organisation Disposals Database, the MoD identified that there is the potential to build up to 711 houses on the Redford Barracks site.

Gordon continued,

The Council are looking to gather people’s views about the future of the barracks site in order to produce a guide for the future development of a site and to identify community priorities for the site.  I would urge as many people as possible to attend the public drop-in events.

City of Edinburgh Council will host the below events for members of the public to attend: –

Tuesday 11th June, 2pm – 7pm, Colinton bowling Club

Thursday 13th June, 2pm – 7pm, Canalside Café/Boroughmuir Rugby Club

Tuesday 18th June, 2pm – 7pm, Oxgangs Library
