A General Election for Thursday 4 July 2024. Wester Hailes is in the Edinburgh Pentlands UK Parliamentary Constituency and these are the candidates that will be standing:
- Scott Arthur – Labour Party
- Joanna Cherry – Scottish National Party (SNP)
- Dan Heap – Scottish Green Party
- Richard Lucas – Scottish Family Party
- Sue Webber – Conservative Party
- Bruce Wilson – Liberal Democrats
This will be the first election where photo ID will be compulsory for voting. There’s a list of acceptable forms of ID on the Electoral Commission’s website here. For those with no acceptable form of photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate online here.
It’s free to apply. You’ll need:
- a recent, digital photo of yourself
- your National Insurance number
You can still apply if you do not have a National Insurance number. You’ll need to provide other documents to prove your identity, for example a birth certificate, bank statement and utility bill.
You can register to vote online here, and if you are unable to make it to your polling booth can register for a postal vote here.
Who can register to vote
- A British citizen
- An Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
- A Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
- A citizen of another country living in Scotland or Wales who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission.
If you live in Scotland
- You must be aged 14 or over.
- You can register to vote if you’re a British citizen or an Irish citizen.
- You can also register if you have permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, or you do not need permission.
