Edinburgh author Leanne Weston is set to delight Tuesday’s Space @ The Broomhouse Hub Bookbug audience with a reading of her new fantasy rhyming story, The Fairytale Witch and the Quest for her Sparkle, which explores people’s differences, self-growth, and unconditional love through the adventure of an autistic little witch.
The event which will take place Tuesday 22 October 2024, 9.30am – 10.30am will see Weston, who identifies as neurodivergent, tell her tale to around 40 children and their parents/guardians. She hopes the book will help everyone understand more about autism and neurodivergent behaviour.
Weston said:
I wrote and illustrated this book based on my own autistic child, when I couldn’t find stories where the main character was neurodivergent. I wanted to create a story that children could see themselves in and relate to whilst teaching others about differences in a way that is fun and engaging.
It has been well-received by local schools, nurseries, and health professionals, becoming part of the curriculum reading in some areas.
Local parents/carers and their wee ones (up to five years old) are invited to hear Weston read the first book in her planned children’s series on Tuesday at The Broomhouse Hub (79-89 Broomhouse Crescent, EH11 3RH). Signed copies will be available for purchase.
Weekly Bookbug meetups at The Broomhouse Hub are designed to help build children’s social skills and support their speech and language development. It’s also a great way to spend time bonding with each other and meet other families in the community.
