The Post Office has announced plans to close 115 branches across the UK due to a planned overhaul, including Wester Hailes post office.
The Wester Hailes post office is one of two in Edinburgh earmarked for closure with the other being the Waverly market branch. The closures put around 1000 jobs at risk across the country. The closures are part of a transformative plan where the Post Office hopes to close their owned post offices like Wester Hailes and adopt more franchise locations or transfer ownership of the branches to retail partners.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) union have called on the Post Office to stop the plan.
CWU general secretary Dave Ward said:
For the company to announce the closure of hundreds of Post Offices hot on the heels of the Horizon scandal is as tone deaf as it is immoral.
CWU members are victims of the Horizon scandal – and for them to now fear for their jobs ahead of Christmas is yet another cruel attack.
