WHALE Arts will be holding a day of community film screenings, including local favourite The Huts, on Saturday 6 September 2025, as part of the Local Resistance Programme.
The day of short films followed by Q&As will run from 11.00am – 3.00pm with 3 special screenings of films about community action:
Scottish Hands for Ukrainians: How the ‘Living and Working in Scotland’ Project Helped Ukrainian Refugees Rebuild their Life – 11.00am – A documentary about Space @ The Broomhouse Hub’s two-year-long Living and Working in Scotland Project, which helped Ukrainians rebuild their lives in a new country.
The Huts A film about Wester Hailes – 1.00pm – A documentary commissioned by Channel 4 in 1984. The film shows how community huts impacted on the lives of local individuals and groups, creating change and improving the life of the wider community. It focuses on positive aspects of the area, using drama, documentary and music to show the strength of the local community.
Smoke and Mirrors – 2.15pm – This film, made in partnership with the ‘Edinburgh Against Stock Transfer’ campaign group, documents their successful challenge to The City of Edinburgh Council’s plan to privatise all 23,000 of the city’s council homes.
The event is a drop-in with seating in the screenings given on a first come first served basis. There will also be a short film created to document the Community Wealth project playing on a loop to tide people over till their next screening starts.
The event is part of the Local Resistance programme a series of screenings across different community hubs in Edinburgh as part of the Local Cinema Network. You can find more information about the programme on WHALE Arts website.
