Smilechildcare awarded second Green Flag

Smilechildcare Green Flag Nursery

Local nursery, Smilechildcare, 17 Calders Grove, has been awarded their second Eco-Schools Green Flag!

The Green Flag is awarded by Eco Schools, which is part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful charity, and shows that the school or nursery is working towards being sustainable and is teaching children about being responsible with the environment and in the community.

The flag is awarded for two years and after the school or nursery must renew their award. After renewing they are tested again to make sure they are continuing to their work and they may even have to expand in some areas. This is often done by schools who may have large number of pupils, but it is a real achievement for Smilechildcare who are a smaller charity with a much smaller number of children.

The nursery focused on three main topics before being awarded the flag, these were transport, bio-diversity and litter. The children did many activities to meet these areas including a traffic survey and road safety classes, they used rain catchers, planting and growing in the garden and even litter picks at local sheltered housing!

Speaking about the award nursery manager Donna Rodger said:

We are delighted to have been awarded a second green flag. Thank you to all the children, parents and carers who helped us get here. We look forward to continuing  working together towards our next one.

The flag will be flown from their flagpole, picture below, so make sure you pop along and see it if you are in the area!
