Police release ATM scam warning

Police Scotland are urging the public to remain vigilant for an ongoing ATM scam that has been reported in the city.

Officers in Edinburgh have so far received two reports of fraudulent activity on people’s bank accounts after the victims attended at Scotmid cash machines, which went offline and did not return their debit cards.

The first incident was reported outside the premises on Lindsay Road on 31 May 2015 before the second report was made on Easter Road on Wednesday 15 July 2015.

On both occasions the ATM stopped working and swallowed the user’s card, forcing them to leave the area and contact their bank.

Prior to the cards being cancelled, they were removed and used at nearby cash machines before sums of cash were withdrawn.

If you experience a similar problem at an ATM then contact your bank with the machine still in sight and report any suspicious activity in the area to police immediately.
