Woods Youth Centre Demolished

The Woods Youth Centre was demolished yesterday, Thursday 14 November 2019, with the land earmarked as a possible site for affordable housing.

The Woods Youth Centre was built in the late 80s as a multi-purpose youth centre. It provided open access to 11 – 18 year old every day of the week. Created by the Woods steering group, who were made up of local residents, the Woods centre was a youth centre where young people could feel safe and find sympathetic adults to help them if need be.

There was a lot of excitement during its construction with letters of support received from then Manchester United Manager Alex Feguson and Arsenal Manager George Graham, and signed photographs of support from Elton John and Genesis. You can read more about the construction and the involvement of the Woods Steering Group in this copy of the Sentinel from January 1988.

In recent years the Woods Centre had been used by the Council as a base for the Print, Mail and Scanning service. However, a recent Asset strategy review found the building was no longer fit for purpose and that the site could provide land for around 50 homes.
