Local MP Takes to the Canal to Encourage People to Get Outdoors

Joanna Cherry QC MP took a paddleboard trip down the Union Canal today with young people taking part in summer activities at Bridge 8 Hub.

Cherry visited the canal-based outdoor activity hub near the Calders in Wester Hailes, which offers a range of activities including canoeing, kayaking and cycling around the canal. As well as trying out paddleboarding, she visited the newly-built canoe sheds and met with some of the young people from the local area who have been developing their skills as assistant instructors at Bridge 8 Hub.

Bridge 8 Hub offers training and employment opportunities to young people alongside its programme of activities for children and adults. Commenting, Cherry said:

The impact of lockdown on people’s mental health and wellbeing has been devastating. With most restrictions easing this week, this is a great opportunity to get back outdoors.

Bridge 8 Hub is a fantastic project offering outdoor and water-based activities to people in the Calders, Wester Hailes and across the city. I am amazed at what Sean Barry and his team of young instructors have created for the local community, particularly given the challenges of lockdown.

There are so many exciting activities happening through Bridge 8 Hub right on our doorstep in Edinburgh South West. I had a great time trying out paddleboarding today and hearing about the other activities on offer. I would encourage everyone – old and young – to get outdoors this summer and try something new.
