Man rescued from canal

A person was pulled to safety from the canal yesterday evening around 8.15 pm  near the bridge at Walkers Wynd.

A resident who was watching the fireworks from their window saw an unusual shape floating in the water and, realising it was a person, phoned the police. At the same time someone walking on the canal bank became aware of the person in the water and jumped in to the canal to save them.

The person who was rescued was taken to Royal Infirmary Edinburgh to be checked over, and we believe was later released.

A police spokesman said it appeared to be an accident and that the man had fallen in.
