The next programme of Canal College is starting on the 23 September 2014 and it is looking for new recruits!
Launched by the Scottish Waterways Trust this is an outdoor heritage skills training programme for 16-25 year olds who are not in employment, further education or training. Volunteers will complete a 14 week course along the Union Canal. The course takes place on a Thursday and Friday 10:00am to 4:00pm. There are no tuition fees and travel expenses are paid.
Any volunteers will spend most of their time along the Union Canal learning about canal engineering, management and maintenance, landscaping, wildlife conservation, tree planting and vegetation management.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to achieve the following certificates:
– Saltire Awards, John Muir (Discovery Level), Youth Achievement Award, a Health & Safety Certificate from Scottish Canals and a Canal College Award from Scottish Waterways Trust.
The Canal College also gives support with practical job searching, CV writing and interview skills. On completion of the course they can provide a reference for any future employer.
