Local MP, Joanna Cherry QC, has been nominated for a Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award. Described as a ‘Social Driver,’ Joanna Cherry received her nomination for challenging staff to get involved in supporting local organisations and campaigning for the month of December.

The SNP’s Joanna Cherry and her office volunteered in all areas of Edinburgh South West and got involved in everything from serving coffee at Social Bite’s ‘Social Suppers’ to mucking out at Ravelrig Riding for the Disabled to wrapping presents for teenagers at Wester Hailes Youth Agency. Team Edinburgh South West also marked International Human Rights Day and the UN’s Climate Change Conference in Paris.

Speaking on project ‘OfficeAdvent,’ Joanna said:

Since being elected as a Member of Parliament last year, I have been continually reminded that Edinburgh South West is built upon the enthusiasm and dedication of its people and organisations and driven by an army of individuals who are passionate about making a difference.

On the run up to Christmas, I wanted my office to visit and help out with as many of these local good causes as possible.

The annual awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of diplomats and politicians who represent the interests of their communities in the areas of policy, social awareness and business development.

Grassroot Diplomat aims to create positive role models at government levels, challenging the culture of complacency and encouraging government institutions and elected officials to lead effectively for the people they serve.

Speaking on her nomination, Joanna Cherry said:

I am deeply honoured to have been nominated for a Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award.

My Office and I enjoyed every single visit and campaign day. They reminded us of the fantastic and diverse people that make up Edinburgh South West. Each individual and organisation who welcomed us deserves an award for their passion and the visible difference they are making in the lives of those they help.

I am so grateful for them and I am hugely privileged to serve as their Member of Parliament.

The Grassroot Diplomat Awards will take place in London on Wednesday 20 April 2016.
