The Friends of Hailes Quarry Park have had a busy few months so far this year with no plans of slowing down soon! Here is an update from them on what’s been happening so far and what’s coming up in the coming weeks and months.
So far this year, we have enjoyed having local young people help us with willow planting as they work towards gaining a qualification. The young people were also repairing a fence, and will be back helping with other projects in the park. We’ve also been sowing chives, planting garlic, working on the ornamental and berry bush garden, and doing a practice Bee Walk (more of that later!). We had some graffitti damage in the park which we’ve nearly finished fixing.
As always, they would love for you to come and take an active part in what’s going on. Here are some dates:
- April-October – Gardening Volunteering Group – 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month, 6.30-7.30pm. Next date is this Wednesday 15th April.
- Environmental Volunteering Group – Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th June 9.30am-1.30pm – this is activities to support biodiversity in the park such as creating new habitats and maintaining the ones that are here. It also includes monitoring biodiversity.
- Litter Picking Group – Saturday 2nd May & Saturday 13th June 11am-12.30pm.
- Family Day is down for Sunday 14th June: please come and bring a picnic and enjoy the park on this day.
- Bee Walk: The Bee Walk is on the last weekend of every month – usually the last Sunday, at 5.30pm starting from the entrance to the park at Murrayburn Road. (If the forecast for a Sunday is extremely rainy, it will run on the Saturday instead, as we’re unlikely to find many bees in the rain – but otherwise, it’s the last Sunday at 5.30.)
For all the activities listed, children are welcome if supervised by an adult.
The Lantern Evening will be held on Saturday 31st October: although it’s a while away, do please put it in your diary! They will be be looking for volunteers to help put up the lanterns.
The group would like to thank Josephine and Richard for all their hard work, as they have now stepped down from the committee. They are also looking for new committee members. For more information on the group follow their Facebook page here.
