New award launched to celebrate local heroes across Edinburgh south western

Stacey McGregor has been announced as the first recipient of the new Edinburgh South Western Local Hero Award, launched by local MSP Simita Kumar.

The new award will be presented quarterly and aims to recognise people who make an outstanding contribution to their communities. Residents are invited to nominate individuals who have made a positive difference across Edinburgh South Western.

Stacey, who works for The Health Agency, has spent more than a decade supporting the Wester Hailes community through a variety of community engagement roles.

In her current position, Stacey leads the Tasting Change programme, which works to tackle food insecurity through initiatives including a weekly community lunch, the Sunflower Pantry and practical cooking workshops that help local people prepare healthy, affordable meals.

Her work is driven by a belief that everyone should have access to good-quality food and by her dedication to reducing health inequalities and promoting social justice.

Commenting on her role at the Health Agency, Stacey McGregor said:

It’s great to be a part of something so special.

The Health Agency provides a wide range of support services in Wester Hailes, including help with mental wellbeing, physical health, cancer and long-term conditions, as well as social groups that reduce isolation and bring local people together.

Commenting on the award, Edinburgh South Western MSP Simita Kumar said:

One of my priorities since being elected has been getting to know the incredible community groups, organisations, and services, that support local people across Edinburgh South Western every day.

I have had the privilege of meeting so many inspiring people who dedicate their time, energy and skills to improving the lives of others.

Too often, those who work tirelessly to help our communities thrive, whether through running social groups, delivering essential services or volunteering their time, go unrecognised.

The Local Hero Award is about celebrating those individuals and highlighting the positive impact they make to our communities.

I am delighted to recognise Stacey as our first Local Hero. Through her work at The Health Agency, she has made a significant contribution to improving the lives of people in Wester Hailes with a grassroots approach.

Everyone I spoke to, from colleagues to local residents who benefit from the services she leads, spoke highly of her dedication, humility and character. She is a truly deserving recipient.”

Nominations for future Edinburgh South Western Local Hero Awards are now open. Residents can nominate an individual who has made a positive contribution to the local community by emailing Simita.Kumar.msp@parliament.scot.
