Small Sparks grant helps Clovenstone garden get wild

The latest Small Sparks grant awarded today by the Wester Hailes Community Trust will help bring wildlife to the Clovenstone Community Garden.

The award of £250, presented to Wayne Shennan will allow local residents to purchase tools and building materials to put bird boxes and bat boxes into the community garden and around the area. They hope that this will then be used by the school and local residents for fun and for education. The bird boxes will be different sizes to attract various breeds of bird, and Wayne explained that the RSPB have given helpful advice on bird box types and suitable locations. The group have also been in touch with the Lothians Bat Group to find out more about bat box design and location.

Speaking of the award Wayne said:

We would also like to set up a Facebook page so that people can send in their photos and comments about the birds using the boxes. It will be a great way of getting more people involved.

Wayne is also keen for other people to get involved in making the boxes and is happy to show anyone interested how to get started with making a bird box.

The WHCT’s  “Small Sparks” fund provides small grants of up to £250 to local individuals and groups to help make a difference in Wester Hailes.
