What Future Do You Want For Wester Hailes?

How Can You Make It Happen?

All the information, comments and suggestions from the Open Space Event are now in a report that is being shared across the community.  Held on the 25 April, the day was full of lively discussion, raising many important issues. The Digital Sentinel reported on the day’s success and format, and you can read more about the day’s events here.

The groups that came together on the day kept notes of everything that was discussed as well as their agreed action points.  Wester Hailes Youth Agency organised an Open Space event for young people after the main event which showed similar levels of enthusiasm and interest from those taking part.  A report has now been compiled of all that was recorded at both events and is being passed over to the Wester Hailes Community Council as the representative body for the area.  The report forms an important resource of local priorities but it also highlights the interest people had in taking on actions themselves to make a difference in the area and to bring about the future they want to see for Wester Hailes.

Action Topics Included

  • Community Centre and use of unused land
  • More bus links and transport issues
  • Making Wester Hailes safer for community members and helping people to understand what to do when they have experienced crime
  • Tackling Legal Highs
  • Making the Community Better
  • Using IT

There was also a wide range of issues highlighted on the day including vandalism, activities for young people, hate crime, anti-social behaviour, road safety, dumped rubbish….

The full report can be found here.

UPDATE 3 September 2015

2015-04-25 Open Space Event

A report has been created of the Open Space Follow-up event which took place on Saturday 8 August.

The report outlines a series of action points that were agreed upon at the event. These are split into the following categories:

  • Communication
  • Making the Area Better and Beautifying Local Spaces
  • Legal Highs
  • Better use of Wester Hailes Plaza
  • Making Wester Hailes a Safer Area

Read the full report to find out what actions were agreed upon each category. The current plan is that the suggested actions will be pursued by the Wester Hailes Community Council. It was discussed at the Community Council meeting on 2 September 2015 that it would be added to the agenda of a future meeting and that a subgroup could be created to act on each theme.

UPDATE 21 July 2015

There will be a follow-up event on Saturday 8 August 11.00am-1.00pm at Wester Hailes Library to further plan together how we will take forward the agreed action points.

It would be great if as many of the people who attended the original Open Space can make it along but anyone with an interest in Wester Hailes is very welcome.

The event aims to focus on the following three action points (we are currently writing up summaries of how things have developed since the event, click the action points to find out more):

There will be another event at a later date to focus on the other action points.

If you want to get involved in any of the action topics just get in touch with the Community Council on their Facebook page or email them at westerhailescc@gmail.com.

Is there an issue you think should be discussed by the community?  Have you got ideas, solutions, action points that you want to suggest or take forward.  Let the Digital Sentinel know! You can either submit your story, or email digitalsentinel@whalearts.co.uk.
