Friends of Hailes Quarry Park

Friends of Hailes Quarry Park – a group of local resident volunteers – are looking for more people to join them!

You don’t have to be an active volunteer – you’re welcome just to join and share your memories of the park, as well as your ideas for the kinds of activities and events you’d like to see there, or just to be kept up to date, or report any fly-tipping you see – or help in other ways like organising raffles, an activity or an event.

They have been lobbying for the rebuilding of the flooded sections of footpath, which was carried out in recent years, as well as building a community herb garden, and helping to develop the future plans for the park for the next five years, including development of the play facilities alongside improvements for nature and biodiversity. The herb garden is open for everyone in the local community to come and pick some sprigs of herbs to use at home (so long as you’re confident of how to use them), whether or not you belong to the Group. They also put in benches and a picnic table in the area to make it a place to come and relax.

Their regular activities (weather permitting) include:

Every second and fourth Saturday of the month, April – September, 10am – 12 noon:

  • Herb Garden Group – come and help us maintain the herb garden.

Every last Sunday of the month, 2pm:

  • Community Litter Pick – meet at the play area (please wear gloves; children welcome if accompanied by an adult).

Every last Sunday of the month, 4pm:

  • Group Meeting – come and meet us at the yellow picnic table in the herb garden and share your thoughts.

They are on facebook here. Their plan for the park is online here and the Friends would like your help with it if you have a moment.

A few years ago, they asked people in the area if they would like to see the old bike track brought back into use. There wasn’t much response – maybe because of the lockdowns – so they just cleared the section within the woods using hand tools (rather than looking to hire a contractor to also refurbish the section of the track beyond that). Now they are looking to ask people again about this. If you – or your kids – would use the bike track, please let the Friends know (or go along to one of their events and meet them). You can email them at hailesquarrypark@gmail.com as well.
