Space @ The Broomhouse Hub concluded Carers Week 2025 (9-15 June) with a magical celebration of local carers on Sunday, 15 June.
One hundred members of our South West Edinburgh carers support community visited The Hub for an afternoon of crafts, homemade pizza, music, and so much more.
Folks of all ages enjoyed an enchanting performance by Magic Gareth, cuddled up with exotic animals from Paisley-based Sense of Nature, and danced along to local singer Lena Rae, between designing beaded bracelets, painting rocks, planting flowers, and blowing bubbles.
Attendees said of Sunday’s event:
‘Thanks for all the hard work you put in today. We had a lovely time.’
‘Thanks for Sunday. We all had a blast.’

This year’s Carers Week theme, ‘Caring about Equality’—displayed front-and-centre at The Hub, thanks to RR Events—focuses on highlighting the challenges and inequalities faced by unpaid carers across the UK, calling for a fairer society where they have access to greater support.
Kerry Smith, Space Carers Services Manager, said:
Our service offers carers from the age of five to adulthood support with practical, emotional, and social elements. We offer assessments which help us to analyse caring roles and offer tailored support. We have social respite groups for adults and young people to take a break from caring and enjoy activities which they might not normally be able to do. We have a dedicated and friendly staff team who are always ready to offer advice, accept referrals, and help signpost to appropriate organisations.
There are 5.8 million people in the UK caring for a family member, friend, or neighbour who is ill, older, or disabled. Despite contributing an estimated £184 billion to the UK economy each year, many carers feel undervalued and unsupported.
Carers Week 2025 is organised by Carers UK, alongside charity supporters Age UK, Carers Trust, MND Association, Oxfam GB, Rethink Mental Illness, The ME Association, and The Lewy Body Society.
Together, the eight charities welcome individuals and organisations to join them in raising awareness to increase visibility for carers with decision makers, services, employers, communities, and businesses.

Helen Walker, Chief Executive of Carers UK, said:
Carers Week 2025 is a crucial opportunity to raise awareness, highlighting those who provide essential care to family members, friends, or neighbours who need it most. We want to see a future where carers have the right support and the same opportunities to lead healthy and financially secure lives alongside their caring role.
Individuals, employers, businesses, schools, health and care services can make a difference by coming together to highlight the importance of “Caring about Equality”. With all parts of the community involved, we can work together for an equal society, where carers are recognised, valued and supported.
Space @ The Broomhouse Hub, which has supported carers of all ages for many years, runs weekly group meetings for those aged five to 18, as well as monthly sessions for adults (aged 25 and over).
